HOWTO: Connect to a BBS Using NetRunner

NetRunner is a lightweight, modern terminal program designed specifically for connecting to Bulletin Board Systems. It focuses on simplicity and ease of use, making it a good choice for users who want a straightforward Telnet experience.

This guide explains how to connect to a BBS using NetRunner.

What You’ll Need

  • A modern PC running Windows or Linux
  • Internet access
  • A BBS that supports Telnet

NetRunner does not support real modem dialing.

Step 1: Install NetRunner

Download NetRunner from its official site or a trusted BBS archive.

After installation:

  • Launch NetRunner
  • You will be presented with the main connection interface

No additional setup is required to get started.

Step 2: Create a New Connection

  1. Choose New Connection
  2. Enter the BBS details:
    • Host: BBS hostname or IP address
    • Port: usually 23 or 2323
  3. Assign a name to the connection

Save the connection profile.

Step 3: Terminal Settings

Verify or set:

  • Terminal Mode: ANSI
  • Screen Size: 80×25
  • Character Encoding: CP437

NetRunner’s defaults are usually correct for most BBSes.

Step 4: Connect

Select your saved BBS entry and choose Connect.

If the connection is successful, you will see the BBS login screen.

Limitations

  • Telnet only
  • No modem support
  • Limited scripting compared to SyncTERM

Final Notes

NetRunner is ideal if:

  • You want minimal configuration
  • You only use Telnet
  • You prefer a clean, modern interface

For modem users or advanced configurations, SyncTERM is a better choice.
